Your role as a teacher is of vital importance in assisting students achieve their potential. The resources available at Step Up In Education are another tool for you to use with your class to help students get the most out of their time with you in the classroom.

You and your students can access:

  • Video tutorials
  • Practice questions with detailed solutions as well as a printer friendly version of the questions

The benefit of practice questions are obvious. Why, as a teacher, would you have a need for video tutorials? You already explain the theory in class and/or provide notes for students to learn from. Are you aware how often students will Google a topic and then sift through the images and video search items rather than reading a page dedicated to that topic? Here are some examples of how to use the video tutorials:

  • Students who miss a class can catch up on missed theory
  • Students who struggle the first time to comprehend all aspects of the theory can reinforce the classroom content
  • As a revision opportunity or to have the content explained in a different way
  • Or our favourite idea; Starting up a flipped classroom

A flipped classroom, in very simple terms, is getting students to listen to “tradition chalk and talk” at home, and do the “traditional homework” of trying to answer problems in class time. It is very similar to asking students to do pre-reading of a chapter in a text book (but someone gets credit for being innovative by giving it a new name). The teacher simply tells students to watch a particular video tutorial at home before class. The benefits of a flipped classroom are:

  • More time in class for demonstrations and experiments to compliment the theory
  • Students have more time where collaboration with others is beneficial (Tackling difficult problems or asking the teacher questions)
  • Students can pause and rewind any content they need repeated
  • Caters to a wider range of learning styles compared to a traditional text book

It is also very easy for you to organise; Simply replace some of the chalk and talk time in class with an opportunity for students to complete practice problems. Set the homework a couple of days in advance to be fair to students who are time-managing all their subjects. Short and simple quizzes or perusing student note taking can be used to keep students accountable.
